How to Decorate A Small Space Apartment

DECORATE YOUR SMALL SPACE APARTMENT LIKE A BOSS

While you can’t make your apartment any bigger than it already is, you can make better use of the space you have so that it feels bigger!

At first it might seem completely impossible: after all, when you moved in, you knew the place was small, and you didn’t do anything to take up more floor space than you had to… or did you? When every single square foot counts, you’ve got to get really creative with your furniture to make the most of what your landlord gives you!

There are two places where you can get creative to give your apartment more style and reclaim that precious, precious foot room: the walls and the furniture. Without further ado, let’s see what we can do:

Use Your Walls and Go Vertical

These days you’ve probably been to a few friends’ houses where there was an extra  bookshelf on the wall. If you’ve ever installed one of these yourself, you know it can save you a lot of space on your tables. Well, anything that’s light enough can be placed on one of these shelves, not just books: you could replace some of those floor lamps with lighter clamp lamps attached to a wall shelf that no one can bump into. You can put Bluetooth speakers on them to avoid tangled cables. Every inch adds up!

Don’t forget that the less things that have to stay on a table at a time, the more you can use that table space… or not! Clearing off your tables will make the room feel more open and spacious, which will be great for your head: who wants to feel claustrophobic in their own home? Maybe you’ll even feel relaxed enough that you can put your feet up: literally!

The more wall shelves you put up, the more space you might be able to reclaim on your tables and floors… if you get especially creative with it, you might choose unusual shelves that look like floating furniture, or stack the shelves in a pattern: make your space your own!

But shelves aren’t the only way you can make your walls work for you: you can put up hooks like the ones you put up for a few coats in the entryway, but anywhere in the house. If you haven’t got enough counter space, or if your oven mitts and dishrags are cluttering up the little kitchen space you have, go high and mount them on hooks out of the way. Your kitchen will look cooler and you’ll feel better.

Of course, reclaiming your space isn’t just for the front rooms: your  bedroom closets might feel stuffed to the brim, but if you hook up some hooks up on the wall, you can hang things around your floating shelf arrangement. Even consider ditching your laundry basket and getting a hanging hamper: you’ll feel better at bedtime not tripping over the last few days’ laundry!

Use your furniture!

In a small and cramped space, the furniture you choose could make all the difference. Of course, you could get rid of all your furniture and sit, sleep, and eat on the floor, but unless you’re willing to go the extreme route for solutions, you need to use your furniture to your advantage. Consider trading your current furniture for some that will do double duty! Consider buying furniture designed for  small spaces and apartments.

You might feel like you’re living in a man-cave if you start looking at chairs with drawers in them, but storage space is really going to help you feel less cramped in your urban home! In addition to shelves and drawers in furniture, you can always get small baskets to stock things under beds and tables, out of the footpath, just like their contents! A  bed with drawers can allow you to get rid of that wardrobe you keep stubbing your toe on and go for a smaller one that will actually allow you to walk in your bedroom.

But what about the  small living room area? You’ve already stocked everything you can under your table and its shelves and drawers, and you’ve got to have something to eat on! This is the end of the road for reshaping your living space, right?

If you haven’t already got a  sectional couch, you should definitely consider it. The smaller the couch you get, the more you’ll feel cramped with more than one person, even if it’s your sweetheart; but the longer a couch gets, the more it doesn’t even seem to fit in your space, and trips everyone up. The sectional is a great compromise: they’re deceptively big, and can be pushed right up against the table to make room when room is needed.

The bent shape also makes them feel easy to section off with strategically placed pillows: you can ditch the big comfy chair and use some strategically placed pillows to make it feel like more than one lounge chair, or move the pillows out of the way for a luxurious and intimate seat for a couple that will feel like part bed, part couch.

If you’re getting rid of  lounge chairs and have to nix the ottomans with them, you may not want a replacement that matches your sectional, to save space. After all, you could also angle your legs right and use the sectional itself as an ottoman and seat. But if you do get another matching Ottoman, try to make sure it’s one that is flat enough that it can double as a table in a pinch, or maybe it opens up and you can use it as another convenient drawer in your living space!

As long as you keep it creative and look around for the right furniture and hanging solutions, even the smallest apartment can feel luxurious and comfortable. There’s no need for us to feel claustrophobic in our own apartments!
